Gunsmithing Fun

Earlier this week, I took my M&P 9 and 9c in to have Trijicon night sights installed. Yes, I know I could have done them myself, except, I’ve never been good at “fixing” things, and I’d rather have pay a professional rather than chance screwing up my guns.

Since these two are my EDC pistols, this meant dragging out my old Sig 225 to carry while these were in the shop. Don’t get me wrong, I like my Sig, but there’s a reason I upgraded to the M&Ps. Still, I needed something to carry while the M&Ps were out of action. My suspicions were confirmed when the tech told me it should take 5 to 7 business days to complete. Needless to say, I was surprised when I got a phone call that afternoon.

Gunsmith: Mr. Ward, your pistols are completed and you can pick them up at your convenience.

Me: Really? I thought they wouldn’t be done for another week.

Gunsmith: Yeah, well I got in between two heavy builds, wanted something simple to do, and saw your pistols just sitting there. So, their done and you can pick them up.

Me: I’ll be there in 20.

I do so love seeing those three dots glowing green in the night.

South Florida Bloggers/Readers Shoot

For the few of you who don’t read Miguel’s blog, but for some reason read mine, he’s holding a blog shoot at Nexus in Davies, Florida on Sept. 21st at 10.

My idea would be to get us one of the nice ranges at Nexus for ourselves and do a bit more than just static bang-bang. I have to work out the details and even if it can be rented. I would love to work with everybody on shooting on the move, from cover and some basic positions. Nothing fancy, just the basics.

You will need a handgun, magazines (3 preferable, more the merrier) holster and mag pouch, eye and ear protection (you may wanna double on ear if you are sensitive), cap or visor, a roll of 1/2 inch masking tape and about 100-150 rounds of ammo. Nexus has ammo and IPSC targets that last longer than just paper ones.

This thing is open to gun bloggers and readers of those blogs. After we are done shooting, we can depart to some nearby eatery and make excuses as why we shot so crappy. One thing…OK, two things: I don’t eat chicken or stuff that lives underwater.

I’m planning on mozying on down to see how badly I shoot. Maybe I’ll bring my sword if it gets too bad. Sword always beats paper!

Passing On the Tradition

My nephew goes back to school next week. So, I took the day off of work, collected the boy and my shootin’ buddy, and headed down to the shooting range.

That’s with the brand new 10/22 we bought for him to use.

And with the M&P-15/22.

The boy blew a couple of targets apart with concentrated .22 fire and had a great time. Another new shooter firmly in the fold.

Metal Tuesday – Kamelot – When the Lights Go Down

This week’s Metal Tuesday is Kamelot’s “When the Lights Go Down.”

This song popped up on Pandora when I was searching for new music a few years ago and introduced me to Kamelot.

Lyrics:

Rules without exceptions last eternally
Every move you make creates your destiny
I’ve come to soak my
Sorrow in Halo Black
As black as the seal on my soul

Cause when the lights are down
There’s no more to say
Love is the real pain
An internal revolution in my mind
Cause when the lights are down
You’re so far away
Tell me your real name
In the silence of the darkness we unite

(Rules without exceptions last eternally
Every move you make creates your destiny)
What can protect me from the past
And all the things that I have done
She told me
And then she was gone

Cause when the lights are down
There’s no more to say
Deep in the shadows
Where the last of my delusions made a stand
Cause when the lights are down
She’ll take me away
Tell me her real name
And in death we’ll live the love we never had

Oh come all ye faithful
Beneath the Moon
Beneath the Moon
Into the void as one
Marching on

Cause when the lights are down
There’s no more to say
Love is the real pain
An internal revolution in my mind
And when the lights are down
She’ll take me away
Tell me her real name
And in death we’ll live the love we never had

New Pistol For Army

The Army is looking at some of the limitations with the Beretta M9 and deciding if they need a new handgun.

Lethality is among the M9’s several “limitations,” said Daryl Easlick, project officer for close effects. The requirement for a new pistol calls for “an increase in permanent wound channel,” which suggests something more powerful than a 9mm may be on the horizon.

Other limitations the new pistol must overcome include:

• The slide-mounted safety. When solders rack the slide to alleviate a jam or stovepipe in the M9, they often inadvertently engage the safety — and won’t realize this until they reacquire and squeeze the trigger.

• The open-slide design, which allow contaminants and dirt into the system.

• The lack of a modular grip, integrated rail and night-sight capabilities.

• The inability to suppress.

• Limited service life — replacement should have a service life of at least 25,000 rounds.

There is a lot of talk about switching to a .40 S&W. The big contenders would be Glock, Sig, HK, and of course, S&W’s M&P. I’m a little biased because my EDC are an M&P 9 and 9c (sometimes one or both).

My personal opinion would be the adoption of a polymer-framed, striker-fired “family” like the Glocks or M&Ps.

Friday Quote – 8/9/13

Freedom is the right of all sentient beings.

Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots. Y’know, this guy.

I was listening to Penn Jillette’s podcast, Penn’s Sunday School this week, and at one point Penn mentioned a study that showed libertarians believe that freedom is not the means to an end, but an end goal in and of itself.

Re: Gun Store Lawyers, STFU

I take great pains to make sure that any advice I give is backed up by current facts. I read the experts to make sure what I think I know is actually, y’know, correct. Why? Because some people actually value what I say and have made decisions on my advice. People who I respect have depended on advice I gave them to defend their lives.

So it appalls me when I read an article with anecdotes of “experts” giving horrific advice. RTWT.

If you are telling people that they can’t draw unless they are within 21 feet or can’t shoot an intruder because they might just be there for the TV, then do us all a favor and STFU! Not only are you not helping us, you are putting those who follow your advice in danger. What’s your next piece of advice? Don’t vaccinate your kids because they’ll get autism?

Sweet FSM, if you know that people regularly depend on your advice, then do us all a favor and make sure it is based on the most current thinking by the experts. Please?

Growing Militancy Within Police

I just finished Radley Balko’s Rise of the Warrior Cop. I found it to be a well-researched commentary on the growth of SWAT units and their use in increasingly mundane police work. I highly recommend it.

Some items of note:

1. The Castle Doctrine. Those of us in the RKBA are well aware of the Castle Doctrine in self-defense against criminals, but Balko delves deep into its original uses against government invasion of homes. Particular of note is how the Castle Doctrine helped to frame both the Third and Fourth Amendments. Balko also details the eroding of the Castle Doctrine in regards to the police.

2. The War on Drugs. Our Puritan war against people using drugs has done two major things – helped erode Constitutional protections against police intrusion/invasions and lavished federal funding for police to act in more militant ways.

3. SWAT teams. There are very good reasons for having a SWAT team. Situations where the risk of not doing something is higher than the risk of using very violent tactics. Hostage rescue and active shooter events would be two very good examples. Fortunately, those situations are extremely rare. Unfortunately, that means SWAT teams have a lot of available time to be put into use where they introduce a level of violence that is at best counterproductive, and at worst, needlessly cost lives.

I remember when I started getting into guns around 16. I was reading Cooper’s Corner in the back of a Guns & Ammo magazine about how cops should conduct their duties in police uniforms not in balaclava-hooded tactical garb. At the time, I thought Col. Cooper was being old-fashioned and out of touch with current realities. Now, I think he was spot on.

Metal Tuesday – Hammerfall – Last Man Standing

This week’s Metal Tuesday is Hammerfall’s “Last Man Standing.”

Here’s a funny little anecdote. Two current members and a former member of Opeth decided to do a side project. From their description: “The project was born on a coffee break when Dan Swanö, myself and our ex-drummer Anders decided to record a metal track for fun. Both songs on the ep are very tongue in cheek classic heavy metal tunes. It was fun at the time, but then along came Hammerfall and they were serious about it.”

Lyrics:

I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing

I, I am the one, the one
Who sold his soul, his soul
Forever gone
To be the last man standing tall

I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing

Glorious, noble in my mind
Everything you fight to win
Taking all and giving
Whatever my pride will let me
Not backing down, no giving in
I wouldn’t lose, I couldn’t

I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing

I walk alone with my head held high
Never felt that I belong
Stand my ground at all costs
Running through life with blindfolds
Just for the right, right to be wrong
Nothing would rule my world but I

I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing

Nothing would rule my world but I

I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing

I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing

Seeing clear of what I’ve done
I refuse to let things go
I can never once admit I’m wrong
And what I have to show

Seeing clear of what’s at stake
And the things I have to change
I just hope I can, it’s not too late
To get a chance to end this pain

West Palm Mayor Upset About New Gun Range Being Proposed

The mayor of West Palm Beach doesn’t want her little town sullied with a new gun range.

“This petitioner, this applicant has done everything he can do to make this a more palatable development,” she (Mayor Jeri Mouio) said. “But the fact that it’s a gun range is concerning to me.”

And of course, it’s the residents who are upset with the very idea of guns traveling to and from this new range. Considering this is part of the Florida Gold Coast, I imagine that a bunch of transplanted NIMBYs are bitching about things they have no idea about, but I could be wrong.

Still, considering all the legal wrangling necessary to build a gun range, I can’t imagine someone going through all that if there wasn’t a market.

Once this thing gets up and running, I’ll probably trek across the state, because y’know NIMBY tears are even better than hippie tears for weapon lubricant.
