Friday Quote – 4/19/13

“This is the horror which Robin Hood immortalized as an ideal of righteousness. It is said that he fought against the looting rulers and returned the loot to those who had been robbed, but that is not the meaning of the legend which has survived. He is remembered, not as a champion of property, but as a champion of need, not as a defender of the robbed, but as a provider of the poor. He is held to be the first man who assumed a halo of virtue by practicing charity with wealth which he did not own, by giving away goods which he had not produced, by making others pay for the luxury of his pity. He is the man who became the symbol of the idea that need, not achievement, is the source of rights, that we don’t have to produce, only to want, that the earned does not belong to us, but the unearned does….Until men learn that of all human symbols, Robin Hood is the most immoral and the most contemptible, there will be no justice on earth and no way for mankind to survive.” – Ragnar Danneskjold

From Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged

I know this is a long quote, but apt in light of this article from Politico. Over half of the population think it’s morally right to use force, in the guise of the government, to take from some people (who earn more) and give it to other people (who earn less).

Income inequality is only a useful measure when used in conjunction with a nation’s economic freedom. In a truly free economic system, I would expect to see a few at the top making very large sums due to their highly specialized skills and experience, while most people earn much less due to the more generally available skills.

I am, by education, an accountant. There are thousands of accountants across this nation. Some of us are paid extremely high salaries because of additional skills, expertise, and career choices. Some of us are paid much less because we have less additional skills and expertise as well as making different career choices. Do I deserve some of the money made by the senior partners at the Big Four because I chose not to obtain the skills and expertise or take the career path that would get me that salary?

The Good, the Bad, and the Appearence-Challenged

Wednesday April 17, 2013 will be remembered as a huge victory for the gun rights proponents – and it should be. Even with a sensational tragedy, countless victim stories, full-court press by the media and the Obama administration (but I repeat myself), the Senate couldn’t come up with the votes to pass any of the gun control measures before it.

Activists should hoist their drink of choice and salute themselves. They made their voices heard. That’s the good, and it’s very good.

The bad, in my opinion, comes is with the exception of Feinstein’s overreaching dream amendment, all of our wins were not because the majority of the Senate supported our side, but because there weren’t enough votes to block a filibuster. Just like British rights, that’s based on a rule that can be changed. Both sides have threatened to change that rule when they were frustrated by it. IMHO, at some point, the Senate will be dumb enough to actually change the rule. The point is we need a solid majority – not a solid-enough minority – to protect us from these bills in the future. And there will be more of this in the future. We won a huge battle, but not the war.

The ugly is that this defeat may drive the gun control advocates to the states. They’ve already won battles there in Colorado, New York, Maryland, and Connecticut. I expect to see more action on the state and local level, and I expect it to be more of this cloak-and-dagger, passed-in-the-middle-of-the-night action.

This battle is finished, and we salute those that stood with us, and rejoice in the outrage and lamentations of our opponents. Today we celebrate, for tomorrow the war continues.

Remaining Rational in the Face of Hysteria (Boston Edition)

IntelNews.org put out an analysis on Five Dangerous Myths About the Boston Bombings. You need to RTWT.
The big one was that the Boston bombings may not have been an act of terrorism anymore than the shooting at Sandy Hook was an act of terrorism.

It’s very hard to keep things in perspective when most of the information sources have the volume cranked up to eleven – either for commercial or ideological reasons.

Metal Tuesday – Within Temptation – Iron

This week’s Metal Tuesday is Within Temptation’s “Iron.”

This song has been stuck in my head for the last month. I’m also a sucker for cover art.

Lyrics from Metrolyrics:

Left in the darkness, here on your own
Woke up a memory, feeling the pain
You cannot deny it, there’s nothing to say
It’s all that you need to find the way

Oh damn, the war is coming
Oh damn, you feel you want it
Oh damn, just bring it on today

You can’t live without the fire
It’s the heat that makes you strong
‘Cause you’re born to live
And fight it all the way

You can hide what lies inside you
It’s the only thing you know
You’re embracing that, never walk away
Don’t walk away, don’t walk away
Don’t walk away, don’t walk away

Raised in this madness, you’re on your own
It made you fearless, nothing to lose
Dreams are a drug here, they get in your way
That’s what you need to fight day by day

Oh damn, the war is coming
Oh damn, you feel you want it
Oh damn, just bring it on today

You can’t live without the fire
It’s the heat that makes you strong
‘Cause you’re born to live
And fight it all the way

You can hide what lies inside you
It’s the only thing you know
You’re embracing that, never walk away
Don’t walk away

You need not to fear us
Unless you’re a dark heart
A vile one, who preys on the innocent
I promise

You can’t hide forever even into the darkness
For we’ll hunt you down like the animals you are
And pull you in the very bowels of hell

Oh damn, the war is coming
Oh damn, you feel you want it
Oh damn, just bring it on today

You can’t live without the fire
It’s the heat that makes you strong
‘Cause you’re born to live
And fight it all the way

You can hide what lies inside you
It’s the only thing you know
You’re embracing that, never walk away
Don’t walk away, don’t walk away
Don’t walk away, don’t walk away

Filling the Silence With Noise

As I write this, three people have died in the Boston Marathon bombings, and almost a hundred and fifty have been injured.

Condolescences to the families of the slain, and best wishes goes to the injured.

Now comes the waiting as the FBI and other law enforcement agencies do the hard work of investigating what exactly happened and who did it. Already the opportunists are coming out to blame their political opponents and/or give uninformed opinions for pay/screen time. To my knowledge, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. There are approximately 12 million people in this nation who believe the world is being run by shapeshifting reptiles. For all we know right now, it could have been one of them trying to liberate us from our reptilian overlords. We just don’t know.

Like most people, I have a burning need to find the person(s) behind this and do horrific things to them. I also know that I am a skeptic, which means I will wait until the evidence is there to make a decision. Right now, the chattering class is busily filling the airwaves and Internet with noise.

I will wait patiently for the evidence, and deal with the frustration of not knowing. I would urge everyone else to do the same.

Scenes at the bagel shop

Sister-in-law (in response to a comment from me): Well, you know it takes a village…

The Brother: To raze a village.

Me:Do the village, do the whole damn village!”

The Brother: You know, that phrase comes up in our conversations way more than it probably should.

And this is considered a normal morning in our family.
