Judging a Book By Its Cover

I was browsing the Book of Face when I came across an article by Eric Flint talking about the twentieth anniversary of the publishing of 1632. For those of you who were unaware, the premise of the book was to take a West Virginia mining town in 2000 and drop it into central Germany during the Thirty Years War. I picked up the book from a discount book seller because the cover intrigued me. I think I blew through it in one night.

If you are in anyway interested in alt-history fiction, you are doing yourself a disservice by not grabbing a copy of 1632. Plus, you can find a free electronic copy all over the internet.

Family Dinner Time

My rocket scientist brother and his family moved across the state about eighteen months ago. The sister-in-law and the kiddos were over last weekend. My nephew was telling us about the campaign is running for his new friends. He was explaining how he was using a spider lycanthrope to lure his players into a spooky trap. I turned to The Brother.

Me: I think we did too good of a job.

Robotech Lives

More to the point, Harmony Gold managed to extend its licensing agreements past the 2021 deadline.

From Den of Geek:

Harmony Gold USA, Inc. announced today that it has reached an agreement with the Japanese anime studio, Tatsunoko Productions, Co., to extend the worldwide, co-copyright ownership and exclusive management, excluding Japan, for its landmark anime series Robotech (including Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada). This agreement was achieved after a lengthy negotiation and allows Harmony Gold to continue to exploit the animated Robotech franchise well into the future.

It looks like one of the big factors is Sony wanting to develop a movie franchise with related video game and other products. I’m skeptically optimistic about that.

The other issue left on the table is the status of bringing other Macross properties to the US. Although Macross Plus and Macross II are available, there’s been no word on bringing over Macross Frontier or Macross Delta.

I hope now that the deadline is extended, Harmony Gold goes back and develops some new Robotech stuff. Finishing Shadow Chronicles would be a nice start.

Comments on John Wick

The Wife and I saw all three John Wick movies last weekend. We had to fast forward through the puppy death in the first one, because The Wife wouldn’t be able to watch the rest of the film otherwise. We enjoyed them, but they are violent – particularly the third.

So, this comment from The Wife kicked over my giggle box:

We watched all three of those movies, but they were so ‘roided up, it was like watching six shoot ’em ups.

Monday Musings

  • Saturday was”date day” for The Wife and me. We went to see Avengers. I enjoyed it. No spoilers, but they did wrap up things quite nicely. If the Star Wars folks do the same for The Rise Of Skywalker, that might erase the foul taste of The Last Jedi. We also went to The Melting Pot for the first time (because someone was nice enough to give us a gift card as a wedding present). Yeah, I kinda said “Fuck It” to my calories this weekend.
  • On Friday, one of the team (not me, surprisingly) mentioned that Saturday was Star Wars Day. My boss asked about other geek holidays. It amazes me that in a data service, the only reason my team knows about Pi Day and Talk Like A Pirate Day is because I put up signs on my door. Their lack of geek knowledge is disturbing.
  • Is it bad that I want to decorate the sitting room with prints of famous paintings that I only know about because of Civ 6?
