My brother gave me the CD saying it was pretty much right up my alley. After listening to it, I told my brother he was right, but damn they sounded a lot like Blind Guardian. At which point I was informed that Demons & Wizards was a collaboration between band members of Blind Guardian and Iced Earth.
I was introduced to this band while in high school. Namely, one of my classmates handed me a cassette (yes, that long ago) and said, “You like metal, here.” It was definitely in the vein of late 80s/early 90s hair bands, but they seemed to have a slightly harder edge. “Outlaw” quickly became a favorite of mine because I’m a sucker for Westerns.
Lyrics:
I got a twenty man posse right on my ass
I’m ahead of ’em now but they’re comin’ fast
Busted out at dawn, it’s past midnight
Won’t get a stop to drink till the morning light
I got a fistful of lead buried in my back
Got a hundred thousand dollars right in this sack
I’m just beginnin’ my life, i’m ready for death
Been runnin’ for a while and they ain’t caught me yet
Lawman killer, I’m an outlaw
Livin’ testament that crime pays
no such thing as a good job these days
My daddy was a sailor, my mother a whore
Brought up by a gypsy, left at her door
Raised on the street, I’m dirty and mean
Blink your eyes, I’ll pick your pockets clean
Because I’m not afraid of death, looked him in the eye
Done unreal things you wouldn’t realize
Sleep with one eye open, real smart
Take an inch of your life in the beat of a heart
Lawman killer, I’m an outlaw
Livin’ testament that crime pays
No such thing as a good job these days
Go ahead punk, make my day
I’m an outlaw, yes i’m an outlaw
Good times, bad times, hard times the same
Live my life same as Jesse James
Wanted poster showin’ my name
I’m an outlaw, yes I’m an outlaw
I’m an outlaw
I’m an outlaw, yes I’m an outlaw
i’m an outlaw
Outlaw
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Tyr’s “By the Sword In My Hand.” Mostly because it’s been stuck in my head for the past week. Still, it’s more in that strong Germanic/Nordic power metal.
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Seven Kingdom’s “After the Fall.” Those of you following Game of Thrones should recognize the character being talked about in the lyrics.
This band was a pleasant discovery when my brother and I went to go see Blind Guardian in St. Pete a few years ago. Plus, they’re a local band.
And to be honest, I have a thing for female fronted metal bands. I blame it on early exposure to Pat Benetar.
Lyrics:
I’ve seen nightmare’s wings
Flying high in feverish dreams
Break these chains of misery
No more climbing walls for me
Now wings replace these broken legs
Guide me to my destiny
I feel the cold of Northwind’s Breeze
Raven show me how to fly
Set me free in Summer’s eyes
Across the frozen land of Winterfell’s Kings
A quest to breach the Wall
To reach the land of ice and snow
After the fall
I finally realized
The future of your life
Is not always what it seems
After the fall
I fully understand
The answers that I seek
Are beyond my wildest dreams
Dark news on dark wings
Another comes to join the hall of kings
I fear the worst is yet to be
So run to the North
From the men of Iron shores
To a destiny that’s calling me
Pitch black wings of destiny
Speaking to me in nights of Summer’s dreams
Pitch black wings of destiny
Guiding me to land of ice and trees
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Delain’s “Control the Storm.”
Lyrics:
I can feel it grow
Starting like a little storm
Itching in my toes
But it’s will to take over
Ain’t quite that small
I can feel it grow
I can hear it moan
I can hear it’s bitter cries
In my veins it crawls
Underneath my tongue it hides
I’m in control
An error in my genesis
The reason why I started this
Where did we go wrong?
Don’t you know
In the end you’re no stronger of hand
You are no stronger of heart
Don’t you know
In the end, we’ll be tragically torn apart
If we can’t control the storm
Does it get to you?
Fury in your fingertips
It doesn’t get me too
Turning hands to angry fists
In rageful bliss
Oh does it get to you?
Crying all your lullabies
Do you lick your wounds
Wondering how we could try to stop this useless fight
An error in my genesis
The reason why I started this
Where did we go wrong?
Don’t you know
In the end you’re no stronger of hand
You are no stronger of heart
Don’t you know
In the end, we’ll be tragically torn apart
If we can’t control the storm
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Circle II Circle’s “Heal You.” I like them because they remind me of later Savatage (around Taunting Cobras).
Lyrics:
Now I walk alone
Every waking hour
This power
I make my own
I’m not who I’ve been
Everything is changing
Arranging this flight within
They’re looking for something
Racing through this mad life
There’s only one thing
We can take this time
I can show you
I control you
Welcome to my life
I know you
I’ll conceal you
I can heal you
Of what you have become
Now this time’s arrived
Every waking moment
I wanted to feel alive
Breaking from the past
I know I’ll never have to
Go back through
Those places
At long last
All of us falling
On the sacred roads they’ve led us
Hear the calling
They will never forget us
I can show you
I control you
Welcome to my life
I know you
I’ll conceal you
I can heal you
Of what you have become
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Sonata Arctica’s “My Selene.” This is one of those songs that will get stuck in my head and I have to burn it out through repeated plays.
Lyrics:
Nocturnal poetry
Dressed in the whitest silver, you’d smile at me
Every night I wait for my sweet Selene
But, still
Solitude’s upon my skin
A life that’s bound by the chains of reality
Would you let me be your Endymion?
I won’t bathe in your moonlight and slumber in peace
Enchanted by your kiss in forever sleep
But until we unite
I live for that night
Wait for time
Two souls entwine
In the break of new dawn
My hope is forlorn
Shadows, they will fade
But I’m always in the shade
Without you
Serene and silent sky
Rays of moon are dancing with the tide
A perfect sight, a world divine
And I
The loneliest child alive
Always waiting, searching for my rhyme
I’m still alone in the dead of night
Silent I lie with smile on my face
Appearance deceives and the silence betrays
As I wait for the time
My dream comes alive
Always out of sight
But never out of mind
And under waning moon
Still I long for you
Alone against the light
Solitude am I?
In the end, I’m enslaved by my dream
In the end, there’s no soul who’d bleed for me
Hidden from daylight, I’m sealed in my cave
Trapped in a dream that is slowly turning to a nightmare
Where I’m all alone
Venial is life when you’re but a dream
The book is still open
The pages as empty as me
I cling to a hope that’s beginning to fade
Trying to break the desolation I hate
But until we unite
I live for that night
Wait for time
Two souls entwine
In the break of new dawn
My hope is forlorn
We will never meet
Only misery and me
This is my final call
My even fall
Drowning into time
I become the night
By the light of new day
I’ll fade away
Reality cuts deep
Would you bleed with me
My Selene?
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Kamelot’s “When the Lights Go Down.”
This song popped up on Pandora when I was searching for new music a few years ago and introduced me to Kamelot.

Lyrics:
Rules without exceptions last eternally
Every move you make creates your destiny
I’ve come to soak my
Sorrow in Halo Black
As black as the seal on my soul
Cause when the lights are down
There’s no more to say
Love is the real pain
An internal revolution in my mind
Cause when the lights are down
You’re so far away
Tell me your real name
In the silence of the darkness we unite
(Rules without exceptions last eternally
Every move you make creates your destiny)
What can protect me from the past
And all the things that I have done
She told me
And then she was gone
Cause when the lights are down
There’s no more to say
Deep in the shadows
Where the last of my delusions made a stand
Cause when the lights are down
She’ll take me away
Tell me her real name
And in death we’ll live the love we never had
Oh come all ye faithful
Beneath the Moon
Beneath the Moon
Into the void as one
Marching on
Cause when the lights are down
There’s no more to say
Love is the real pain
An internal revolution in my mind
And when the lights are down
She’ll take me away
Tell me her real name
And in death we’ll live the love we never had
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Hammerfall’s “Last Man Standing.”
Here’s a funny little anecdote. Two current members and a former member of Opeth decided to do a side project. From their description: “The project was born on a coffee break when Dan Swanö, myself and our ex-drummer Anders decided to record a metal track for fun. Both songs on the ep are very tongue in cheek classic heavy metal tunes. It was fun at the time, but then along came Hammerfall and they were serious about it.”
Lyrics:
I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing
I, I am the one, the one
Who sold his soul, his soul
Forever gone
To be the last man standing tall
I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing
Glorious, noble in my mind
Everything you fight to win
Taking all and giving
Whatever my pride will let me
Not backing down, no giving in
I wouldn’t lose, I couldn’t
I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing
I walk alone with my head held high
Never felt that I belong
Stand my ground at all costs
Running through life with blindfolds
Just for the right, right to be wrong
Nothing would rule my world but I
I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing
Nothing would rule my world but I
I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing
I, I am the one, the one
Who lost control, control
But in the end
I’ll be the last man standing
Seeing clear of what I’ve done
I refuse to let things go
I can never once admit I’m wrong
And what I have to show
Seeing clear of what’s at stake
And the things I have to change
I just hope I can, it’s not too late
To get a chance to end this pain
This week’s Metal Tuesday is Edguy’s “Down To the Devil.” Nothing spectacular here, but good, solid, catchy metal.

Lyrics:
Roaming the plains
where a number is your name
In a palace
And you’ll never find the door
Oh look into the mirror
Is it what you wanna see
Or just a cuddle toy
The vogue has washed ashore
No I don’t care what you say
Into the darkness I plough my way
I’m striking out for paradise
To be the one I am
We’re going down to the devil
We are striking out for paradise
To bedlam below – down to the devil
The mad parade is coming home
Can’t you hear the sound
As they make the hammer pound
Rusty nails into a coffin of your size
To bury you alive
you mature until you’re ripe
Then they reap you
When you’re beautiful enough
in their eyes
They lurk to wall in your belief
Put up glass ceilings that you can’t see
To break down the freak
They don’t want you to be
We’re going down to the devil…
Oh we’re going down
Here’s your invitation, your instigation
Your damnation to the hellfire club
